Spent some more time on the personal newsletter script I started back in July. It’s in a pretty good place right now and I like getting the updates every morning. I’ll post a quick write-up on my projects page shortly.

This week’s Jamulus jam was just two of us. Thankfully, we weren’t plagued with the same connection/sound quality issues as last week. We started messing around with an original song by the lead singer. It has a lot of potential, I just need to come up with a grooving bass line.

I took this week off. While some might call it a staycation, I call it a mini-retirement. No matter the terminology, it was awesome. I got some late season sailing in, accomplished most to the things on my to-do list, played some bass, made pizza—an all around good time. Now, I need to gird myself for the return to work on Monday.

Since 2022, I’ve been using a docker image someone created to run our Jamulus server when we need it. It’s quick and easy to set up and it works great. If you’re interested in doing a similar thing, I put together some instructions on running your own Jamulus Server. While I was at it, I noticed that the docker image hadn’t been updated in 3 years, so I forked the repo, updated the Linux and Jamulus versions and rebuilt the Jamulus docker image.

I also did some more work on the personal newsletter (mentioned previously). Now, it also lists the day’s events from a shared calendar. The more dynamic content in the newsletter, the better. Knowing what’s coming up that day is very helpful. I think weather might be next.

Since I had more leisure time this week, I amassed quite the collection of interesting links. So many, that I decided to save a few for next week. You’re welcome.

Photo of a new, R211 series subway on the B line arriving at 7th Avenue Station in Brooklyn. The electronic sign displays the letter "B" in an orange circle with the text "CONCOURSE LOCAL".
New B!

I was pleasantly surprised to see one of the new R211 trains running on the B line.

A new train on one’s regular line is like getting a new car. Well, the new car smell isn’t quite as pronounced and it doesn’t require ponying up tens of thousands or dollars or crippling debt.

On second thought, it’s better than getting a new car.

Black and white photo of Dave Brubeck at a piano with text: "SORRY, NERDS 5/4 IS DAVE BRUBECK DAY"

We were in Florida for a few days this week. That is my primary excuse for posting this 6 days late. It wouldn’t be the end of the world to skip a week, but I don’t want to break the chain or miss the opportunity to use this picture of Dave Brubeck.

Before blasting off to the Sunshine State, I made some more progress on the blogroll history graphic. It’s mostly functional now and allows for some filtering and sorting. It could do with some visual design though.

The text engraved on the plaque is: "City of New York Department of Plant and Structures, Transmitter House for Radio Station WNYC, F.H. La Guardia - Mayor, F.J.H. Kracke - Commissioner, 1936, Constructed by Works Progress Administration.
Plaque at the old WNYC Transmitter House – Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

NYC Congestion Pricing Data is being published by the MTA. Sadly, there have been many reports of government data becoming unacceptable over the last couple weeks. So, it’s nice to see a new dataset available. Go forth and visualize!

We took a trip to Greenpoint on Saturday. I say “a trip” because it involved a ride on the G train (running in two parts this weekend, even more exciting!), which makes it feel farther away than it really is. We took a walk around WNYC Transmitter Park. The old, WPA-constructed transmitter house is still there, but there are no vestiges of the old towers.

It was a successful trip, we returned with a very affordable ($6!) Bob James/David Sanborn record I’d been looking for (courtesy of Captured Record Shop), a Bodega Kitties mystery box (from myplasticheart), and an apple fritter the size of my head (from Moe’s Doughs).

After a couple weeks off, our regular jam session was back on. None of us have been practicing, but despite the rust, we didn’t sound too bad. It did serve as a reminder to try to pick up that bass a few times during the week though.
